O seu nome ficará para sempre ligado à história do rock´n´roll por ter criado a primeira guitarra eléctrica, em 1941. Paul não resistiu às complicações relacionadas com uma pneumonia que contraíra recentemente. A sua primeira guitarra eléctrica data de 1941. No entanto, só na década de 1950 começou a comercializar as suas guitarras, numa altura em que a Telecaster – modelo criado pelo rival Leo Fender – já estava no mercado. Slash, antigo guitarristas dos Guns n´Roses, descreveu-o como «um homem excepcionalmente brilhante». Satriani diz que foi «o verdadeiro herói da guitarra».
